National Seniors view on stamp duty for older Aussies

Media reports this week have focused on a problem faced by many older Australians – the burden of stamp duty on home sales.

This tax imposed by the states discourages many seniors from making the lifestyle transitions they need and want, leaving them to “rattle around in a large home in cities desperately short of family-sized housing”, as one newspaper suggested.

Two in three Australians move home between the ages of 55 and 75, many due to difficulties in maintaining the house or garden.

National Seniors advocates the abolition of stamp duty for seniors wanting to sell their homes.
